AdBlue®

Drive Towards a Healthier Future

Viscol cc’s sister company, Blue Sky Environmental Technologies (PTY) Ltd, was specifically founded to locally manufacture AUS 32 under license (Certificate # 0003558) from the VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie) as AdBlue®.

What is AdBlue®

AdBlue® is the VDA’s registered name for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and is a pure solution of 32.5% urea and de-ionised water.

Why Use AdBlue®

AdBlue® is essential for the correct operation of an advanced pollution control technology installed in vehicle exhaust system called Selective Catalytic Reduction or SCR. Unlike diesel, AdBlue® is a clear, non-toxic liquid that is safe to handle and does not damage the environment.

AdBlue® is required by the majority of heavy duty diesel vehicles using Euro V & VI engine technology.

What does AdBlue® do?

The SCR system uses AdBlue® and a base metal catalyst in the vehicle’s muffler to reduce Nitric Oxide (NOx) to water vapour and atmospheric nitrogen. This reaction takes place downstream of the engine in the exhaust system and is known as “after-treatment”. The SCR system has the potential to achieve > 80% NOx reduction rates, allowing the engine to be turned for maximum efficiency which goes and estimated fuel saving of 3-5%.

AdBlue® Production Overview

Blue Sky AdBlue® is blended according to the ISO 22241 specification and verified by a European laboratory before batches are released. Manufacturing procedures are controlled by ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certification.

AdBlue® Distribution Overview

Viscol Eco Solution (PTY) Ltd, a BBB-EE level 2, sell and distribute nationwide, with the majority of product being exported through the major automotive OEM’s first fills.

AdBlue® is available in IBC’s for direct supply to the haulier’s base of operations and smaller packs for on the road usage. Only purchase AdBlue® for a licensee of the AdBlue® trademark, registered by the VDA. Don’t use AdBlue® as a diesel additive.

AdBlue® Legal Overview

The VDA is the custodian of the trademark AdBlue®.  It is paramount that the AUS 32 is blended according to the ISO 22241 spec with the certification of the VDA, to be able to market and sell the product as AdBlue®

It is important to ensure that vehicles remain supplied with AdBlue®, as on board policing systems will enforce a torque penalty if the AdBlue® tank is empty. This is to ensure that vehicles’ NOx emission remain below the legal limit.

It is a common misconception that it is a fuel additive, so never add AdBlue® directly into the fuel tank.
